Email from my brother.....Stabitha, Britney & Space Time Continuum

Another email from my brother for your delectation. This one Is a bit deep, I'm still thinking about the river, I had to ask MrC about Britney (when he told me ...... Duh! I'm a Thicko!) and I can't think of suitably appropriate names. Bit of a conundrum, but will let you read and see what you think.

Hi Fay,
So I spoke to mum and dad again this morning via Skype. Their microphone wasn’t working on their laptop or something so I phoned them at the same time to fault find. I’d forgotten we still had Skype open and my microphone was fine and we were both on speaker phone so everything I said and everything mum said went bouncing down the phone line and down the Skype line and back dozens of times until a worm hole opened up in the space time continuum and we managed to high five Alexander Graham Bell in the 19th century. Well, until mum said she’d had enough of listening to her own voice coming back to her on a five second time delay and closed down Skype. It was one of those slap your own forehead moments.

So mum says you’re beginning to get back on your feet. Great. You can help me solve one my most serious and pressing problems. I’m counting on you. All it takes it for you to apply your brains and come up with some suggestions. (ummmm me? My brains are mush....... Fay)

It all started this week when I felt the need to clear out some space on the PC. We’ve got terabytes of storage but somehow we always end up filling them up with crap. Stuff like pictures and videos of Eva and Sam being super cute, y’know, irreplaceable memories and stuff. Remember when we were kids and we’d have maybe thirty, forty pictures tops of our child hood? Not anymore. Now with digital photography it’s like the Truman Show. You can make a flip book with all the pictures we’ve got of Eva and run it backwards so she eventually jumps back into the womb.

Anyway I was trying to sort through things to delete and found a folder called “Fighting Fantasy” that I’d forgotten about. In it was downloaded files from every Fighting Fantasy choose-your-own-adventure book from my childhood. I remembered downloading them so that I could print them off and give them to Eva and Sam so that they could do what I did and get into reading through these interactive books.
Fooled you! I totally downloaded them so I could do them all again myself. Of course I never did because

(a) I don’t have the time
(b) they’re crap.

There’s an applicable saying here that goes “You can never step in the same river twice”. If you’ve never heard it before I’ll let you mull that one over for while … or go and get a cup of tea if you have.

You can never step in the same river twice because of course the water in the river has moved on and it’s impossible to step into the same body of water. But also on a deeper level you’re never the same person you were either, you’ve moved on as much as the river. “You can never step in the same river twice”. So of course reading through these books that I thought were brilliant thirty years ago aren’t brilliant now. Also I’ve got more experience in some specialised areas such as lugging swords, shields and bows around and I’m reading this stuff and thinking “no way can anyone carrying a heater shield, a two-handed sword and a bow do that.”

Which brings me to my problem. In the same way that those chose-your-own-adventure heroes have too many weapons, I’ve got too many swords, axes, bows etc. Obviously I don’t need to carry them all around at once like those adventure books (I need an estate car to shift mine), my problem is that they all need names. Not just any old names like Excalibur and Sting, I need funny names, like Excalibrogue and Gordon Sumner.

It started with a bit of joke because some of the Anglo-Saxon re-enactors really do have names for their swords, spears and axes because that’s what they apparently did back then. Sometimes these ancient people named their weapons because they were so valuable and costly they earned a name, sometimes it was for mystical and magical reasons, sometimes it was because they wanted to be like the US marines in boot camp from Full Metal Jacket.

Now I didn’t have names for my stuff because I’m fourteenth century and so not like those Anglo-Saxon dudes … but for comedy reasons I started naming some of the weapons after girls’ names. I have a sword called “Kutrina” (do you see where I’m coming from?), I have a dagger called “Stabitha” and a spear called “Britney” (you may need to work that one out). And then after naming those three I’m drawing a blank. I’ve got two longbows, another dagger and an axe to name. It’s killing me now, help me out?

At a pinch I’ll take boys names too. I promise you that you’ll be spending the next half an hour going “Keith? Beith? Steith? Reith? No. Stavros? Stabros? Stab! Ross! No, that’s shit…” But you know, have fun with it. Get a white board and some magic markers, do some brain storming.

Good to hear you’re getting stronger. I hope the biopsy goes okay and if it doesn’t, you know what? We can come up with some least threatening names for your cancer or something. I’m currently thinking "Humphrey".

Love Mark,
xxx

Well firstly dear brother, I'm a little bit hurt you don't read my blog, because if you did you'd know my cancer is called Ted, which I'm sure you'd agree is perfectly threatening enough!
However I'm stuck on names for your various battle weapons.
Over to you, dear reader. I'm sure we won't disappoint, I'm counting on you! Two longbows, a dagger and an axe to name, leave a comment so we can all share
And as always Mark........

Reasons to be Cheerful Week 14 #R2BC

It's that time to look back and celebrate the good stuff which happened this week and link up with Michelle at Mummy from the Heart.....uh, no, back up a bit. Gulp! ......it's my turn to host....noooooo, the pressure. Be kind to me guys! Michelle's on a well deserved break with the family for Easter, but will be back as usual next week.

This is week three post operation for me and I'm feeling good. I'm still not doing very much apart from sofa surfing and watching TV, but on the plus side I'm all caught up on my viewing and I'm now the newest fan of Homes under the Hammer. I've even gotten my Mum into it and she's series linked it!

Regular readers or twitter followers will know about the saga of #gammyfoot which has made another appearance. (if you have no idea about #gammyfoot and aren't too squeamish, click here for the lowdown) I personally think #gammyfoot was getting jealous of all the attention #tedthetumour and #brokenbum was getting and needed to get in on the act. However I'm pleased to report the foot is a lot better, so much so I can get back to walking.

Which leads my nicely onto the treadmill, which has come into its own again. I bought it last year to help recuperate from my hysterectomy as walking is good for the stomach muscles and builds stamina. I live on a steep hill which makes exercising from scratch hard work. Using it means I can go as far as I want without having to worry about the walk back too! Managed to get myself up to a steady 30 minutes (while watching Homes under the Hammer) before #gammyfoot made an appearance, but will be back at it very soon.

I did however get to go out and post a letter on Tuesday! A solo walk, up the dreaded hill and back, I was very proud of myself!

Found enough concentration to get back to my crocheting too! For some reason, I've not been able to hold a thought in my head for very long (writing posts has been a little bit of a love hate relationship) and flit from activity to activity. Crocheting took a proper back seat but tried again on Monday and haven't put it down much since.

Do you like my crocodile stitch scarf?

Wow! Looking back at this post, although I've not been out much, I've still got a lot to be cheerful about! It's true when you start listing things it makes you realise how lucky you are.

There you go, there's mine. I look forward to reading all of yours. Let's face it, I've got plenty of time and a sofa crease to work on. It's either that or I may have to resort to Jeremy Kyle.......... ??! So please give me some great posts to read and link yourself up below.

I liked it so much I did it again .... One year on

It was a year ago today I had a hysterectomy for uterine cancer and I published 'At the of the Day', a light hearted post listing the experiences I could be looking forward to. Take a look here for a read.

And it's not been a bad year. The only real fly in the ointment has been the kidney cancer, but looking on the bright side, at least I knew what to expect (bit like when you have your second baby)

One major advantage of having my spare bits and pieces removed has been HRT. I really wasn't looking forward to it, I've no idea why, I just wasn't. But for me, it's been amazing! My skin has been clearer than its ever been, I've got energy and no nasty mood swings. If I start to feel a bit off, back to the doctors and get the medication checked or changed. On HRT I control the hormones, not the other way around.

I can report from last years list, everything else was also ticked off. I must have enjoyed them too much though as I did it all over again three weeks ago with #TedtheTumours removal

So yes, things have changed and moved on but life's ok. I get #tedthetumour biopsy results on the 24th of April. Let's hope and pray I can say this time next year something similar, that everything is ok

Ps @JaneofAustralia suggested a new twitter hash tag to replace #tedthetumour. Do you like #lifeafterted ?

What's Oomph?

I tweeted earlier today

Has anyone got any 'oomph' they can send my way?

I think it must be in short supply today because I got no offers :(

So if I needed some, I was going to have to generate it myself. After getting sucked into watching Homes under the Hammer and supervising the delivery of the grocery shopping, I decided to take myself off for walk all the way to the postbox! @coffeecurls was asking for some recommendations for a different herbal tea to try and I offered to send some chocolate teabags to sample (I promise, its the future!)

Once I'd found an envelope and paper (I don't post much now!) and then negotiated with MrC about letting me out by myself (I had to promise to take my phone and text once I'd posted and was on my way back....bless) I was off on my first solo adventure post surgery.

It was fab, although climbing up the hill was a little daunting, but I was determined. There was a nice breeze, I could hear a windchimes' melodious tones mixing with the birds chirps and the seagulls cries. Neighbours gardens are blossoming with spring flowers and it was just nice to be out by myself with my own thoughts (and under my own steam!)

I was soon back, I think I was out for about 20 minutes, but I found my oomph. I'm going to look after it this time!

By the way, what's your definition of 'oomph'? I googled.....and was surprised! **blush**

For me, its an energy, a purpose, a lightening of spirit and looking forward, but how would you define oomph and what's your tips for finding it?

Meal Planning Monday w/c 2nd April

Haven't joined in with At Home with Mrs M's for a couple of weeks because of #tedthetumour operation but as I am now 3 weeks post op and moving into #lifeafterted phase I think its time I start back on the planning.

Still not really cooking as I'm too sore. Can't quite believe the doctors told me I would be fine after three weeks! So meals need to be easy for MrC and James to manage (with me supervising!)

Thanks to my daughter who completed an inventory of my freezer, I don't think I need much shopping! I'm not worrying too much about following Slimming World, just as long as we all get nutritious meals without resorting to too many takeaways!

I know's its Easter week, but won't be planning any fancy roasts. Maybe next week!

In no particular order:

  • Faggots, mash and vegetables
  • Fishcakes, chips and mushy peas
  • Chicken Tonight casserole with roast parsnips and carrots (haven't used a casserole mix for over a year!)
  • Meat pie, tinned potatoes and peas
  • Chilli and rice
  • Prawn stir fry
  • Bolognaise and pasta

Very basic, but doable for two guys who don't cook and only eat to live (whereas I live to eat!) Don't forget to get yourself over to Mrs M's for more meal planning menus

If you've advice for quick easy cook meals which are low calorie I can try next week please let me know, I think I'm going to be tired of their cooking by then!
