Meal Planning Monday w/c 7th May

A very quick post today! It's a bank holiday, I'm all out of whack and still feeling the effects of champagne from dinner yesterday. But Meal Planning Monday is so ingrained, it didn't feel right leaving it. I enjoy looking forward to the meals I'm going to be having and linking up with At Home with Mrs M

Here you go! My looking forward to meals are:

  • Soup and Bread
  • Salmon Risotto with Asparagus
  • Baked Potato with haddock and leeks
  • Sausage Casserole
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Pasta and Sauce (packets, left in cupboard from hospital stay) with Salad
  • today's meal was leftover meatball casserole
So there you go, short and sweet, simple and tasty. All is well in the world now I've written my list

Don't forget to check out other planners over at Mrs M's and why not give it a go, promise it saves time and money!

No point sweating the little things.....

I can't believe its another sleepless night. Technically is it a sleepless night if its only 1am? Has enough of the night elapsed for me to pronounce I'm having a sleepless night? I've been in bed since 10.30pm trying to go to sleep, so I suppose so.

That's three and half hours of doing stuff other than sleeping (and not what you are thinking either) I caught up on twitter, read for a bit, back to Twitter, then resorted to counting sheep. Didn't work, so tea and biscuits it is.

Ironically what keeps rattling around in my brain is the fact I've committed to going to the gym tomorrow ... umm actually that's today and think I'm going to be too tired. I need to get the house tidied and cleaned in the morning and that will knacker me out. No-one else will do it (MrC is ill and James is off to Bristol for the weekend) so it's either live with the dog hair rolling around on the laminate floor like the tumble weeds you see on Road Runner cartoons or do it myself.

Plus parking at the gym will be a nightmare so walking there would be a better option. But again as I'm still building up my strength I will be knackered by the time I get there and not be able to do an actual workout. Not that I'm planning to do very much. I've arranged a one to one session with the trainer to put a programme together which will match my level of fitness (very low post kidney removal and kicking #tedthetumour out) and build up my stamina.

Altogether I'm starting to talk myself out of this going to gym malarky. Maybe its too early after surgery. I was given the all clear to go, but what if I'm not actually ready? I dunno, shall I give it a miss?

Let's be honest, come on Fay, be honest to yourself. The gym isn't what is bothering you. It's The Cancer which is at the root of this sleeplessness.

The more time goes on the deeper my thoughts go, no sooner have I parked one (to deal with later) another pops up.
I'm scared. Why am I not dealing with stress very well? What's going to happen next?

How will my family cope if I get worse? How will we cope with no money if I can't work?

Where has my life been going? What makes me happy?
What is the point of things?

What's the rest of my life going to be like? What am I going to actually do with the rest of my life?

How will this change me?

The list is endless and I don't have the answers. I don't think anyone really does.

I'm hoping by writing them down I can properly park them, I don't need the answer's straight away and to be fair I may never get them all sorted. Even if I did, would it make a difference? Things change, my outlook will as I go through this section of my life. How I answer a question now may be different to how I answer it in six months time, six weeks or even six hours.

I will change

I just need to make sure those changes are for the better, that I learn and grow.

"The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude." ~Dennis S. Brown

I better get my arse back to bed. I've still got a house to clean in the morning and gym session to go to. No point sweating the little things, it will all work out in the end

Reasons to be Cheerful Week 18 - Sherlock #R2BC

It's that time again to look back on the week and note down the stuff which have cheered me and link with Michelle from Mummy from the Heart. I'll be honest it has been a tough week (which I've blogged here) Having cancer is crap "No shit Sherlock!"

However life goes on

Wednesday was a great day because the weather was glorious. Managed to get up to 19 degrees. The sun inspired me to take Fritz for a lovely walk and he really behaved himself. He can be a bit of handful sometimes. And someone else who behaved himself was MrC who took a turn on The Hoe with me. That's a big deal in our house! MrC doesn't get out too much at the moment.

I also cooked a macaroni cheese from scratch! Go me!

I took another trip to Cowslip Farm Workshop with Jane and my Mum. We had a lovely lunch and a chin wag. While they bought loads of lovely fabric I sat outside (not as fit as I hoped yet) and I could hear the lambs bleating in the fields, cows mooing back at them and the birds chirping. No cars, buses, TV or radio. Silence with a hint of nature. Just wonderful.

This is a picture of part of the garden, beautiful

Amy is coming home for the Bank Holiday weekend and I get to see her new hair in person! I'm now going to cheer myself up with before and after photo's. I hope she doesn't kill me!

My crochet project is coming along! Doesn't look much, but a big achievement for me! I'm actually following a pattern! Okay, we won't mention this is my second attempt as the first one was a disaster!

And a family roast is planned at Mum and Dad's this Sunday where I'm planning to partake in champagne and port with my cheese after. I've not had a drink for so long (Christmas I think) but I just fancy it. And like they say (not sure who, but I like it) a little but of what you fancy does you good.

Looking forward to next week, lets hope I get my Oncology appointment and they tell me the news they don't need to offer me any treatment and I have been worrying unnecessarily.

Watch this space

I shouldn't have to do this, but what do you think?

Not sure how to feel at the moment, so instead I'm going to write this post and see where it leads me. What do you think?

It's been a week since my Urology consultant told me #tedthetumour was a grade 2 semi-aggressive cancer tumour and my case was being referred to Oncology. Since then I've not heard a thing, nada, nothing, nowt. Is this usual? I don't know. Is it doing my head? Oh YES!

But life goes on.Today I had a consult with Mr Gallbladder doctor, to talk about removing it. I knew it was going to have to go at some point, because when I had the ultrasound on the 1st of February, the senior radiologist told me so. Maybe it wasn't her place to, but I think she was trying to take my mind off the fact they'd found ted on my right kidney at the same time (I still can't believe how lucky I was to have it found by chance)

But of course #tedthetumour took priority when we all started talking about surgery and the poor gallbladder took second stage ( but the forefront since surgery as I've had a couple of very painful attacks in the last 7 weeks) And although a private Urology consultant and my GP both agreed it made sense to take the gallbladder at the same time as my kidney, my NHS Urology consultant thought otherwise.

So here I was sat in the very nice consulting rooms talking to a very nice Mr Gallbladder doctor about the options. His next steps will be to speak to Mr Kidney Doctor as he conducted the last surgery to find out the lie of the land (or my abdomen in this case) and also to liase with Oncology about any treatments they may or may not have in the pipeline for me. He didn't want to compromise any planned cancer treatments as they take priority. All made sense.

But he can't do anything, we are left hanging. It's been a week, 7 whole days since I was told #tedthetumour was cancer but I still don't know what the next steps are. Oncology haven't contacted me.

I visited the MacMillan Cancer centre attached to my hospital, straight after the appointment to see what they thought, is this usual? It sounded wrong to me, but what do I know, I've not been through this before. I'm so glad I did. They work closely with Oncology (but of course) and they went off for a chat and discovered it hadn't even been referred yet. No wonder I hadn't been contacted.

They hadn't received the referral from Urology. What the hell? A whole week wasted.

How long would I have been waiting if I hadn't asked the questions?

I rang Urology and found out the letter, the next link in the chain of my recovery, was on a desk waiting to be sent. The medical secretary explained she was covering for someone on holiday, someone else was on maternity leave and the consultant she worked for was only just back after breaking his leg, which is why things had been delayed. It was being put in an envelope and addressed as we spoke.

Do you know what? I appreciate her honesty, but I just don't care. All I can think about is how long would that have been sat on a desk if I hadn't called. And why a bloody letter? What about e-mail? These are internal departments at the same hospital. Why are we relying on paper and snail or internal mail nowadays? This is the same department I posted about here which delayed my operation date. I'm starting to see a pattern.

So thinking about it maybe I shouldn't be surprised. Maybe its my fault for expecting too much. For expecting empathy and thought about how their actions affect people. Again I'm just a patient number.

As I said at the top of the post I didn't know how I felt but I've come to the following conclusions after writing, editing, deleting the swear words and rewriting ;

It would be very easy to be angry and annoyed. I can waste time and energy (energy I've got precious little of) ranting about it, looking at someone to blame. But it won't change what has happened. I need to look past this.

I need to highlight it to the trust, not to get anyone into trouble, but so they can look at improving their processes.

And be grateful I made the decision to speak up today, ask questions and chase. I will be doing more of it.

I shouldn't have to do this but what do you think?

Meal Planning Monday w/c 30th of April

I missed last week's meal planner. It was a weird week with the news that my tumour was cancerous so unsurprisingly planning went out the window (almost like the way of the diet!) However the tail end of the week saw me eating a lot of salad and I even made a peach and sweet chilli salsa, which is the most creative I've been in the kitchen for a long time!

So I'm back on the wagon (so to speak) keeping everything normal and planning the menu in advance. I'm following the principles of Slimming World although my heart isn't really in it. However the low fat recipes do help keep my gallbladder pain under control (even if all I want to eat is deep fried mars bars!)

Onto this week, I'm planning the following in no particular order

  • Green Bean and Asparagus Risotto
  • Slow Cooker Pea and Ham Soup
  • Slow Cooker Meatballs and Vegetables
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Homemade Burgers, Wedges, Salad and salsa
  • Tinned Soup with Tiger Bread
We've a family meal planned over at Mum and Dad's and I already know they are cooking roast beef with all the trimmings, delicious! I think I'm going to taking a taxi over so I can indulge! I'm going to treat myself to some champagne and will partake in port with cheese and biscuits! Sod it, you only live once!

Don't forget to check out other meal plans over at Home with Mrs M!
